Annette ★½

Annette is my absolute least favorite type of arthouse film: pretentious, incoherent, self indulgent B.S. I admire its ambition. From a technical perspective, it looks fantastic. Adam Driver & Marion Cotillard are two reliably useful actors who elevate their roles into…something. But the music is horrid. The story is nonsensical. The editing is laughably bad. Plus it’s overlong and very tedious. Again, a lot of imagination went into the visuals. However, just because a movie is ‘weird’ or ‘off beat’ doesn’t necessarily make it magical or…good.
