In the cynically humourous words of Billy Wilder himself, Sunset Boulevard is about "a man who wanted a pool, got a pool, and ultimately drowned in a pool. " But of course it is so much more than that — a tragic story of an actor's worst nightmare, or any artist for that matter; the treatment of writers in the industry; the dark side of the press; and so on. But most of all, it's about the extent to which people go to avoid facing their own shortcomings or comepletely fail to see they exist at all.
The stunning first and last shots had me absolutely shaken. An instant all-timer in my book.
