Carol ★★★★

Post-Velvet Goldmine Todd Haynes has shifted to filtering the key themes and concerns over the course of his career through a very polished and refined sensibility, and while it isn't inappropriate for Carol, in a way it would be kind of nice to dial it down a bit to let some luridness slip through. I guess since the source material welcomes a variance of approaches, it welcomes this kind of "What if?" However, Carol's genteel and classicist nature actually does work in its favour, which is an impressive feat, since most latter day movies I see that do this end up being off-puttingly innocuous, yet here it serves to underpin the passions and desires of their central characters.
