A Brighter Summer Day

A Brighter Summer Day ★★★★½

My girlfriend's favourite film, one of my favs as well. Edward Yang's sublime masterpiece: a historical coming-of-age epic that's grown to become a cultural landmark in Taiwanese cinema. One whose fine, beautiful attention to cinematography, intimate atmosphere, and astounding rhythm never ceases to mesmerize and move me, often powerful enough to bring me to tears by the end. All brought back to its purest form in the astounding Criterion restoration. We often sit and cry together after each viewing, this time around is no exception. This film retains its immense, often devastating nature, not a drop of essence is lost no matter how many times you choose to sit through it. A rewarding experience quite unlike any other.
