Annabelle ★★★

Hoop-tober Extra #2

Not quite on the level of last years fantastic "The Conjuring", but an effective horror movie nonetheless. Doesn't overly rely on jump scares (though they are definitely in there), but rather drawn out tension. It mostly works. A basement/elevator sequence is a standout (though they nearly ruin it towards the end with some dumb camera/lighting work) and the Annabelle doll is thoroughly creepy. Both leads are likable, and the supporting cast is solid.

A lot of practical scares here, thankfully, and it's always nice to see a period horror flick. As is often the case, the ending is subpar, but not as terrible as I'd heard.

Worth a look, especially when considering how rare horror films with wide theatrical releases are these days.
