Friends, it gives me no joy to say this, but.... Malignant is BAD.
I, and this is not something I do lightly, walked out after 35-40mins. I've walked out of a grand total of only four movies in my 35 years of life.
The acting & screenplay are so bad I kept expecting a reveal that they're on a movie set and the main character is like a writer or something.... but it's just the film.
If you want to ape a giallo film that's cool, but you still have to make your film good. This was like Grindhouse-level, except not tougne in cheek.
After the title credits, you're introduced to Annabelle Wallis & it plays like a reenactment section of "I Married a Monster" from the ID channel. When the cops show up after the first murder there's so much fog & Dutch angles it's like a cancelled X-Files knock-off from the late 2000's.
Luckily, I was able to charm/negotiate my way (with some VERY broken Dutch) into a replacement ticket to Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings next week in IMAX 3D.
So disappointed about Malignant. Especially coming from James Wan, who I'm a big fan of (I even like Dead Silence!). I'll probably try to finish it once it hits HBO MAX so I can rate it, but idk. Life's too short you know.
Watched (for a time) in a theater.
**Star rating added after I completed the film & to reflect my rating in my later review for it..... Also I accidentally added it & Letterboxd won't let me take it away.
