Promising Young Woman

Promising Young Woman ★★★½

PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN is bold, audacious, deliciously thrilling and has a poignant conviction that palpably courses through its veins. Its style and energy oozes off the screen. Carey Mulligan gives what could be a career performance (although I still prefer her in WILDLIFE personally). Sadly though, while the script mostly does a great job of somehow being both subversive and direct, its ending relies on a narrative contrivance that is frustratingly trite. And obvious. I admire its thematic intent and how it aims its sights at toxic norms, but in execution it's a bit too manufactured given its storytelling to that point. Still, overall, the film packs a wallop and it'll be challenging to a lot of viewers.
