"This is your life. You can go anywhere. You gotta grab the wheel and own it, and drive it like you stole it."
An absolutely beautiful love letter to band culture. This movie masterfully captures the story of a young man who wants to start a band to impress his crush, and the successes and missteps that happen along the way.
I absolutely adored this movie. The characters, including smaller supporting roles such as the main character's burnout brother, are so well-written. Director-writer John Carney is definitely a name I need to look out for, and I'm surprised I've never heard of him. He did a fantastic job.
As a rock music fan, this movie was simply a joy to watch: to see these dorky kids be influenced by rock and pop bands such as The Cure and Duran Duran, trying to awkwardly imitate their style, steadily getting better and better and finally end up writing amazing songs - it's a classic story that happens every day in the world of music.
This movie perfectly captures the youthful spirit of rock and roll and how music can change lives. Absolutely recommended!
