Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Hunt for the Wilderpeople ★★★★★

This film - blimey. Not only does it feel like an instant classic, not only is it probably the first example of the acceptable face of quirk for my wife, but there's a confidence here with every actor and detail and shot and line... a sense of a director happy to embrace both comedy and tragedy, and who manages to pull both off beautifully. To do this so deftly, often within the same scene, is something so many film makers aspire to but so few achieve

Plus there's a beautiful scene which uses Leonard Cohen's "The Partisan" that echoes "McCabe and Mrs Miller" but never apes it, instead feeling wholly unique and beautiful in its own right. Again, that's quite a thing to semi quote a film that's so beloved and iconic and do it so brilliantly. Sublime
