For some reason out of nowhere, my 8 year old had been begging to watch Lincoln. I saw it when it came out and couldn't imagine that it would hold the interest or understanding of an 8 year old. But he was really into it! We stopped to explain a few things, and I'm sure there are still things that passed him by, but overall I think he got it.
For myself, I thought it was great the first time,…
A surprisingly sophisticated story, more adult than the other Ghibli films I've seen so far. I watched the dubbed version, and I found Bill Bob Thornton's v.o. work a little distracting. Everyone else was good. Overall, though, this was an excellent movie.
Rewatched several years later. It still holds up! It does what it says on the tin, and not a lot more, but it does it very well. And unlike so many other movies of its kind, it doesn't overstay its welcome.
This was not a good movie, but it was so earnest that I couldn't help enjoy it in a way that I used to enjoy similarly bad movies. They don't make bad movies quite like this anymore. The directing was very simple. The acting was passable. The story barely held together. But it stirred memories of so many 90s fantasy and sci-fi movies that I couldn't help but smile. It's only because of that nostalgia that earns it this may stars.
