Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi ★★★★½

If Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s plot and pacing are ever unwieldy, it’s for the best reasons imaginable, juggling five different character arcs in three different plot threads across two different timelines for the purpose of at least three fleshed-out thematic theses, all on a massive blockbuster scale. Rian Johnson’s critical smash-hit is populist franchise filmmaking at its most thoughtful and effortful, and yet somehow still supplies the kickass action, silly humour and nonsensical scenarios that made fans love the franchise in the first place, before they decided they loathed most of it. Imagine hating anything in a franchise that repeatedly condemns hatred, especially something as loving and ambitious as this. More words soon if I can pluck up the courage to face the fandom menace. 9/10
