I held off on watching Ran during my stretch of Kurosawa films earlier this year. Largely because I wanted to experience as many of his other older films as I could before moving to this late-career masterpiece—or to his color films in general.
Ran is everything I built “Kurosawa in color” up in my head to be. The film is brimming with beautiful backdrops and that level of surgically precise cinematography, but now is buttressed by such an effective and beautiful color palette that, after only a few seconds in, I felt like I was seeing a film in color for the first time.
