You know, until recently I had no idea that this was written and directed by Taika Waititi, the same guy who also wrote and directed WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, hilarious movie that I really loved! Therefore, at first, I wasn't really interested about HUNT FOR THE WILD PEOPLE. You know, I've heard about it, but I was like, whatever. But after I've found out that he is behind this project, I got excited.
Well, let me tell you this...this movie was a slightly different beast then WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. At first, it was kind of weird, like something directed by Wes Anderson, and at that moment, I wasn't really sure that I will like this, since Im not really a fan of Anderson's work. But once Sam Neill and that kid went on the run, things have become way better for me, and by the end of it, HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE turned out to be a really cute, charming and really funny feel-good-movie with lots of heart, and some really great performances!
Sam Neil and the kid, Julian Dennison, were both fantastic, and their relationship was really funny and emotional. And child welfare services officer Paula played by Rachel House was freaking hilarious! The whole dialogue about here being like The Terminator, while the kid is more like Sarah Connor from the first movie, before she could do chinups, man...I laughed my ass of on that one! And Waititi's short appearance as a drunken (or just weird ass) priest...that was priceless! Also, I loved how Waititi used couple of great songs and editing in this movie, creating couple of really cool and fun(ny) scenes.
Anyway, I really liked this movie...it was so fun(ny) and heart whelming, and it entertained me. I still like WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS a bit more, because its more ridiculous...but yeah, this was good. So...to sums it up, I'll just say this...
"Me and this fat kid / We ran we ate and read books / And it was the best."
And that's the HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE!
PS. I also have to say this. With this review, I finally come to an end of my year long delay with writing review. You see, last year I watched so many movies, and I had so little time to write about them...and Im the guy who likest to say something about everything I watched...so I end up writing reviews for movies I watched like 2-3 months ago, because I just didn't have time to write them earlier, right after I watched those movies. So the whole time I was trying to catch up with myself. And I finally did it! Next review I do, it will be for a movie that I will be watching in the next couple of days...and not something I all ready watched couple of days ago, or weeks ago!
