To Leslie 2022
The best thing about folks rushing to see this run-of-the-mill alcoholic indie is that they'll get to see a Marc Maron performance that would make for a better nomination than Riseborough who never manages to create a lived-in character outside of the histrionics — but Maron does. Of course actors went for Riseborough, though, they gobble up wet eyes, stumbles, and mumbles. It's so strange how a script, written by someone's son, can't locate the person behind the affliction here. Maron's performance shines through because he's lived it. His counterpart always feels like she's acting it out.

The Eight Mountains 2022
Pietro and Bruno, two 12 year-old boys who meet merely by chance. Bruno lives in the Alpine village of Grana and is the only child left after most of its inhabitants (including Bruno’s father) abandoned the mountain life for more lucrative work near larger towns. Pietro is on a summer getaway with his mother from their usual lives in the bustling city. Perhaps out of necessity, perhaps because they are truly two souls meant to discover one another, the two…

Return to Seoul 2022
Such a delicate and tender character study with an astounding central performance from Park Ji-min. Boundaries of identity, age, familial absence, maturity and buzzing with the chaos and impulsivity that comes from rubbing these together. I'm in love.

Flora and Son 2023
i have horrible anxiety and usually when i watch movies, it’s hard to take my mind away from all my racing thoughts. john carney somehow takes me out of that and puts me in a place of joy and laughter and feeling like for at least 90 minutes, i can slow down and be present.
flora and son is an absolute gem and a truly heartwarming film. i cried on multiple occasions and not even out of sadness, just out…

Joyland 2022
Romantic moments undone by patriarchal expectations. There are three women who astound in this Pakistani drama—a trans erotic dancer (Alina Khan), a wife who works (Rasti Farooq), and her sister-in-law (Sarwat Gilani) who lives the most within the patriarchal structure—and then there is a passive man (Ali Junejo) at the center. It feels like this is mostly the portrait of this man who becomes a background dancer in an erotic dance troupe and starts to develop feelings for the beguiling…

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish 2022
The personification of Death in this movie is so god damn chilling. I can guarantee if I had seen this as a kid, that boy would have given me nightmare after nightmare. He still might. But it’s also so effective in the overall way that the film captures what his presence brings. We see Puss, a devil-may-care self-appointed legend who “laughs in the face of death”, rattled to the bone. The way his face shifts, the way we see the…
