Some good sense for visualising action, and some actual inventiveness with the format of shape-changing robots saved this from being another forgettable carnage-fest. That and the lack of the ostentatiously awful colour-grading that peppers the rest of the franchise make this vaguely watchable, with a fun, bopping soundtrack and the inexplicable charm of lumps of metal

I mean, I guess I watch films to show me things I’ve never seen. But maybe I should draw the line somewhere. Aside from being utterly incomprehensible, It’s so weird that we transition from the introduction of new characters and zero plot development to the finale at the flip of a switch. I feel offended by this.

    Morvern Callar

Been a long time coming. I tried the book once and didn’t take to it. This was a different beast. Ramsay’s such a master of visuality and vividness. Where the first half is full of the drab, mind-numbing rhythmic flashes of supermarket-bought lights and tatt cluttering up dinky and grey abodes, Morvern finds much more to look at and engage with in Spain. Interesting to see Ramsay restrain from her natural style in the first half, (aside from that wonderful opening shot) and then let loose with close-ups and digressions as Morvern begins to open up to the world: openness breeds understanding.
