JackBurton1234’s review published on Letterboxd:
I’ve been wanting to see this film since the beginning of last year and I finally got to it.
My first film of 2021 and the first 13/10 of 2021.
I don’t even know what to write.
That final shot is perfect. That final zoom and smile just destroyed me.
Within the opening five minutes I was in love with the film.
I couldn’t take my eyes of the screen.
Every second of this film is pure perfection.
The score is outstanding.
It works perfectly during the ending scene and the car ride back from the hotel.
The story is enthralling.
Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchette give outstanding performances.
Rooney Mara is outstanding especially near the end.
Cate Blanchette is outstanding as well especially in the court scene near the end.
The direction by Hayne’s is outstanding.
He adds so much atmosphere to a film.
If I were to compare it to anything it would probably be In the Mood for Love or Chunking Express in terms of atmosphere.
It’s so full of love and warmth which is exactly what I needed.
My favorite shot is probably the shot of Carol and Therese just riding through the tunnel as the score plays in silence.
The film just looks beautiful.
Every shot feels so warm it’s hard to explain.
Then I have a personal connection to it I won’t get into here.
But yeah easy 13/10 truly an astonishing piece of art.
Next up in terms of viewing I’ll be getting to Promising Young Woman and a few other films.
And I’ll be starting The Criterion Challenge which I decided to join today because why not.
Can’t wait to watch most of the films I’ve got planned. There’s one specifically arriving tomorrow I can’t wait for.
