    Diary of a Mad Housewife

    (Via Kino Lorber's new blu-ray)

I have a theory that if Universal screened this in enough theaters and played it for like five years non-stop, there's a pretty good chance the Equal Rights Amendment could've been passed a lot goddamned quicker.

Diary of a Mad Housewife is one of those scaldingly, harrowingly precise critiques of the worst in men - and the entire society that props it up and excuses it and blames the women for EVERYTHING because why should…

"This car is full of love!"

Christian Slater is so good in this. Think his character in Heathers if he lived another ten years. Cameron Diaz is awesome. Jon Favreau has to be the relative straight man and does that quite well. And there's a scene with Daniel Stern at a gas station that is like Marion Crane at the car dealership in Psycho turned up to 1000 on steroids. It's aged quite well, and it has a real mean streak that works because Berg writes such pathetic bastards.

Though on further reflection, this is an edit a week later after writing this, there are... Flaws. Like,…

"So horribly sad. How is it I feel like laughing?"

Seriously, it's a strange thing for me to give this 5 stars because it almost feels like a duty to do so because of its status as a classic thriller and for its set pieces... actually that's not really true, but I'll get to what I love about the movie in a moment.

I think that Hitchcock here is doing (and try to follow me on this) what JJ Abrams…
