"You're ten, Jojo. Start acting like it."

Not Taika Waititi's best but still very entertaining; it's clear from the get-go that this is a passion project executed well. The balance of comedic and dramatic tone is good, even if not every joke lands, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover how dark and emotionally impactful some of the scenes were. I guess in a movie set in Nazi Germany I shouldn't have expected 100% comedy, but this is definitely the most powerful stuff Waititi has done so far.

Performances were mostly great (especially from the kids), though my grudge against Scarlett Johansson only grows stronger every day. Cinematically the film looks brilliant, too - the costume and production design is one of it's strongest features, alongside the world-class cinematography from Mihai Mălaimare Jr.

Whilst Jojo Rabbit isn't on the same level as Hunt For The Wilderpeople, it still feels like a triumph for Taika Waititi, and cements him as one of the best comedic auteurs going. Nobody else could play stroppy Hitler quite as well.
