Jackho’s review published on Letterboxd:
Peaks hard in the middle and hurtles down from there, throwing all that blessed restraint out the window, but also feels only one rewrite away from a masterpiece.
J. Peele is clearly incredibly good at making movies and there's many brilliant ideas in here but he needs a co-writer, or at least should have let this screenplay sit in the drawer til he knew how to end it. Preferably after developing a willingness to go far-out - for a film that explicitly echoes Evangelion and Akira it never takes a swing at what actually makes those works transcendent.
Some of the absolute best stuff I've seen this year but trapped within probably the year's biggest disappointment. V frustrating. Full marks for the chimp horror though and the parallel between Gordo and Jean Jacket is genius.
