Jack Howard’s review published on Letterboxd:
4th time seeing it. I like it less and less each time I do. It’s not really a story, it’s just stuff happening. Peter doesn’t grow or change, he’s not challenged in any meaningful way. Why are these 17 year olds acting like 12 year olds? The trippy Mysterio sequence is still incredible and unlike anything I ever thought I would see in a superhero movie, but most of the rest falls flat. I really noticed the boring visual language this time. The cinematography, blocking and editing feel like a Disney Channel Original Movie. But this is a Spider-Man film! What are you doing? If a character is speaking, they are shown in a clean close up 95% of the time. It doesn’t show me the environments, it doesn’t show me the relationship between characters - it’s just so dull, repetitive and lazy. This is based on a comic, right!? Give me something tasty to look at!
Inhale. Exhale.
I might need to make a video about this.
P.S. It’s good to have JJ back.
