    some interesting moments / themes (George's toxic relationship with a needy and toxic friend, or the warped but ultimately well-meaning [albeit narcissistic] subjectivity of Julia Roberts' character) however, as a whole, the film tried to do way too much with incompatible parts

    Relentlessly intimate, alienating and bleak. Modernity has seldom looked worse. Big Port Talbot vibe on Ravenna in this film. Antonioni is a master of mise-en-scéne, whose camera staggers with its delicacy and precision. The film's use of colour is utterly resplendent, and its score is fucking despondent and devastating. A draining piece of cinema, but none-the-less a piece of art that gives with the very hand it takes with.
