Uncut Gems

Uncut Gems ★★★★½

“Some men die under the mountain just looking for gold. Some die looking for a hand to hold.”

Cosmic slop. A noose tightening picture of the highest order; one man’s greed and need to keep revisiting the rush of nearly experiencing full collapse over and over blinding him to the larger (sometimes completely unseen) consequences of his addictions. Sure, this movie - as many have already noted - is steeped in a Jewish culture we rarely see onscreen, but the more prominent zealotry is one of pure possession: the need to own something that probably shouldn’t have been unearthed in the first place. Sandler’s terrific, yet the notion that he’ll nab an Oscar for this is baffling. The Safdies are leaning into a shrill sense of sleaze that’s gonna turn the average conservative Oscar voter off completely. Best Supporting for Wayne Diamond or we riot, though.
