Alright, this shit right here is the hot stuff I’ve been waiting to see from Assayas. An incredibly bizarro tech-noir that indulges in things like corporate espionage and hentai, and it’s pretty awesome. Back half of this goes in a more absurdist route, and it genuinely would’ve not worked for me if it wasn’t for that brilliant turning point. More weird shit like this please, Assayas.
The most bizarre and insane genre mashup I’ve seen in a long time. It’s mostly a thrill and shock ride, but it does attempt at being somewhat intriguing through it’s subtext that feels mainly bogged down by the film’s need to be excessive at literally everything. Still worth a watch.
Action and gore galore, which seems to be the infamous appeal of the original show, so it only makes sense that’s the strongest component of the remake. In fact, it’s my favorite part of the show. Other than the animation, which at times, was shoddy (but I’m not sure if that was the intent because it exhibits that rough sketch 80s, 90s Japanese animation art styles which I find so damn charming) everything else just wasn’t up to par.
