Gosh, this was so bloody charming. And so bloody hilarious. And so bloody MAJESTICAL. Definitely the most fun I've had at the cinema in a LONG time. It does get a bit silly towards the end, but the rest of the film is SO GOOD I just didn't care.
I know others have made the comparison before, but Taika Waititi is DEFINITELY the Kiwi Wes Anderson. I mean look at the similarities between Hunt for the Wilderpeople and pretty much any Anderson movie (but most notably Moonrise Kingdom):
~ Misunderstood but loveable foster kid on the run!
~ Grouchy old man!
~ Chapter titles in a quirky font!
~ Soundtracked by children singing chorales!
~ Dolly shots!
~ And even the dog dies!
New Zealand is beautiful. New Zealanders are beautiful. New Zealand films are beautiful. Damn, I wish I was a Kiwi.
