The Devil All the Time

The Devil All the Time ★★★

I was promised "the devil all the time," but it seems we only got the devil "some of the time."

There's potential for a greater film to be found in here, but I'm not entirely sure what Antonio Campos was aiming for here either. It doesn't ever feel like the immensely talented cast is ever wasted, with Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, and Eliza Scanlen among many giving this film their all, but it's hard enough trying to put together what sort of film The Devil All the Time seeks out to be.

Oftentimes very cruel, dwelling upon its tragic elements far too often, The Devil All the Time shows its biggest problems here: many of these disturbing elements never seem to add up properly, coming off as mere shock as its narrative continuously jumps back and forth. What results is a film whose worldview is so blurred, everything starts to feel condensed.
