This was an excercise in maintaining heightened tension for 80 minutes straight, and to superb effect.

    Loving Vincent

    Mini Review:

Wonderful visuals that genuinely captured the feel of what it’s like to experience a Van Gough painting, but in service of a pretty bland story with a fairly repetitive structure. The performances ranged from fine to ehh, and the way it was written felt like a mid-morning PBS special. I’m honestly looking forward to the making of documentary more so than revisiting this. Fine watch for Van Gough enthusiasts, but honestly holds little more value than that.

We Need to Talk About Kevin

    Mini Review:

Everything about this experience was viscerally unsettling. This film has one of the most disturbing and complex parent/child dynamics I’ve ever seen; and more so than many other movies I’ve seen recently, is one of the better examples of visual storytelling. The visual metaphors, although overt, were very functional and fitting for the tone and narrative.

Tilda Swinton’s performance felt effortless and natural, as per usual and Ezra Miller’s titular character of Kevin made the hairs on my arms stand up. This kid shook me. This film shook me, and it’s going to be lingering in my subconscious for the next few days.

    City Lights

    Mini Review:

City Lights is one of the best examples of Chaplin’s ability as a storyteller. Every scene progresses with organic visual comedy, propelling every beat of the story fluently. His very physical performance is delightful as always and the film wraps up with a genuinely heartfelt conclusion.
