Annette ★★★★

there is so much that shouldn't work, and perhaps in lesser hands it wouldn't, but Carax and everyone involved commits and then some. Carax thanks King Vidor, Bela Balazs & Bela Bartok, and Stephen Sondheim in the credits and this legacy makes sense of course, an emotional trajectory across mediums (marked by Brecht) that embraces artifice and transforms our expectations of art and how we're expected to take it in. you could say this risks being overstuffed, with social commentary and media parody, but it shades in the wit with a bitter sense of the sadness within, particularly through Driver's character and his misogyny and aggression, how all of this storms together into an operatic tragedy. baby annette IS the moment.
