Work of Lon Chaney
Falling slightly below such silent essentials as NOSFERATU and METROPOLIS... THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) remains beloved for its famous story, classic monster (Lon Chaney), influential makeup, early use of color (during the masquerade sequence), and re-release with a synchronized soundtrack added. The sync sound version is the way to go, unless you can get to an event with live organ accompaniment.
