the score for first cow is quite minimal, but i love how the main times it’s used, it’s to introduce cookie out in the wild with a melody that perfectly suits him, and then it reappears for him whenever he is alone. it’s like his guide, or a little expression of the goodness he carries around. similarly, a new theme is introduced when we first see the cow coming to the shore. equally tender, but somehow more certain, like it’s…

so, i go back to school tomorrow. it’s the beginning of my final year. in a couple of weeks i turn eighteen. everything is changing, and growing feels like shrinking; life is pressing tighter on my skin. over the past month or so, death is all i’ve been able to think about. i’m seventeen, and i can already feel the world slipping through my fingers. i am not ready for all of this - i feel as if i was…

it’s been discussed a lot how greta wrote the screenplay with lines overlapping and how there had to be a rhythm to it, but it also seemed as though the tender physical contact was constantly overlapping as well - hands intertwined, casual leaning on shoulders or laps, arms linked, faces being held between one hand or two. someone was always in contact with someone else, sometimes being passed between two people. the march family at the center of it all,…

maybe i stan noah & greta after all!!
you can’t help but see greta’s voice seeping into noah’s work. or maybe it’s the way their work has a certain language that they’ve crafted together. like their own little universe. like charlie & nicole making eye contact across the bar, sharing a moment, even when things are falling apart between them. because love is about finding that space, that connection, even in a room full of people. or charlie singing the same sondheim…

this is a film that feels so intertwined with my childhood, and it’s always nice to revisit it & see that its charm holds up (even if some other aspects of it don’t)

recently though, i haven’t been able to think about this film without simultaneously thinking about a quote from my favorite book, too much and not the mood, written by the remarkable durga chew-bose. her writing is very cinematic, and i highly recommend her to you all!!
