    All Star Superman

    ★½

Are you freaking serious? Is this an elaborate joke I don't understand? Any reason why this weird mishmash of unrelated and emotionally incompetent stories and characters, this toxic take on a romance as wholesome as Superman's and Lois', this sexist, creepy, bootlicking, murderous, arbitrary, immoral, conceited version of Superman gets any pass? It can't be because it made people cry or care about anything that happened here if the focus just shifts every minute.

The premise is interesting, I get it, that's what I thought. But the way they do NOTHING of value with that premise is even more perplexing than awful.

Such a lax idea -a character who is given the power to kill and decides to apply his own sense of justice- can have many…

    Sansho the Bailiff

    ★★★½

This is visually astounding and really beautiful whenever it tries but it is an absolute mess in storytelling, its focus shifts so much it isn't even worth recounting, the characters come and go in the narrative scheme without a payoff that feels appropriate to their buildup.

This is supposed to be a story about compassion and charity but it basically fills this moral like a quota in some section during the second half and then just leaves it out to…
