James’s review published on Letterboxd:
The very first blockbuster movie of its kind.
47 long years later this movie still holds up so well. Spielberg’s masterful direction and John William’s iconic score really creates such an incredible atmosphere. The dialogue is still impressive and Robert Shaw steals the show for me as Quint, a character who fantasises over his life on the water and shows determination to set things right again in the quiet island town of Amity.
I can’t give this movie less than 5 stars because of the vast influence it had on the thriller genre. It birthed the summer blockbuster season of movies and changed the way studios approached films. The most important thing to come from all of this, is that Steven Spielberg was finally able to take his unique style and vision to the big screen. Jaws was a viral hit before viral hits were even a thing.
