Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit ★★½

An often frustrating, messy sort of film. Occasionally it hits upon a genuinely clever joke or a satisfyingly touching moment - but more often than not it just rattles frivolously around without much direction or sensitivity. I do honestly think that a better film could have been made from this premise - it’s just that this one just lacks consistency or an interest in really unpacking the knotty ideas at its heart. It more or less amounts to saying that “Nazis are bad, so let’s have a bunch of actors playing Nazis act like oversized children, doing lots of silly things. That’ll show them.”

Side note: props to the two young actors in the lead roles here, I thought they were both great.
