watching Certified Copy, (a film I discovered at the start of the first lockdown in 2020 and really liked), with my parents (who I had assumed would have loved it) is how I imagine one might feel when watching Mulholland Drive with me. they both hated the film, which is funny because I actually think it is a true highlight of 2010s cinema. many of their complaints centred around William Shimell’s performance, which they found wooden, awkward and utterly without merit. (I think it’s probably the best performance by a non-actor I’ve ever seen). however where the film truly shines for me is it’s idiosyncratic two-part structure and the strange narrative twist sandwiched within. it instinctively breeds conversation the second the credits roll, which most of the best films do. a beautiful symphony of interpretations.
