The Devil All the Time

The Devil All the Time ★★½

I see people loving this movie left and right, but it didn't do it for me.

It's a very slow paced movie, which I don't mind, but it did drag when I was watching it. Plus the movie has this weird out of order narrative for the first forty or fifty minutes that is then abandoned and never comes back (aside for some flashbacks near the end).
And I can't help but ask what was the point of presenting it like that? As far as I know it didn't add anything. We see some scenes play out twice, so aside from making the movie longer I don't understand what it contributed to the story.

It's a dark movie where a lot of dark and fucked up shit happens, but it never felt very engaging I guess. If you're making a dark movie, I should feel sorry for the characters feel the ugliness of the world. David Fincher does this extremely well for example.

I just didn't care about these characters at all. Sure, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Sebastian Stan, Eliza Scanlen and all the other actors do a phenomenal job. But I didn't find their characters very interesting at all. And so when the movie started reaching it's climax, I was just about done with it.

Also, what was with that narration? Totally ruined many things that could've been left up to interpretation, just showing the one true version down our throat. It wasn't even from the point of view of some of the characters, it was just some guy reading lines.

Overall, I didn't care for it aside for some great performances that hopefully atract some awards attention and these great actors will be rewarded for their work. I'm clearly in a minority, but feel more comfortable saying the unpopular opinion rather than lying.
