Princess Mononoke 1997

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I really enjoyed the world Miyazaki made in this film and wanted to dive in and expand the lore of the forest gods and demons. Even the drama between Mononoke and Lady Eboshi was compelling (Albeit a little more context on Mononoke would've made me care about her more) However the protagonist is pretty dull. I get that it's the point that he doesn't necessarily choose a side but that made his motivation of saving the forest pretty weak.
But for all its cliches and tropes the true spectacle and brilliant music truly elevates the material into something truly great.

If you look past the awkward pacing, dialogue, and moral agendas. There is a solid story lying underneath this film. The subject matter addressed by the film is genuinely compelling and applicable to todays age. But as always with JS films instead of letting the audience decide he forces an islamic answer as the moral compass at the end of every story. Maybe people were not willing to ponder the religious implications of abortion or rebellion in 1970s m'sia. But when looked back on its the films that ask questions that stand the test of time, not the ones that think they have an answer.
