    Freaky Friday

Ah, freak out! β•š(β€’βŒ‚β€’)╝ … le freak, c’est chic. I admit I have before today never seen any of the iterations of Freaky Friday. Now with Freaky coming out, it seems like the perfect time to fix that.

The theme of having to leave your own body to learn a life lesson has gotten very familiar in pop culture in the last decades, with my favourite being Your Name. The archetype for these body-swap tales, the 1972 novel from Mary…

    Another Round

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a world where you could easily and carelessly watch a newly released film in movie theaters. Tomorrow will once again mark a time for re-closure of all buildings of culture in Belgium anticipating another round of COVID-lockdown, and what better way to quench my thirst for film one last time than with Thomas Vinterberg’s Druk.🍾πŸ₯‚

Giving a pleasant round with four foaming drinking buddies, Vinterberg created a surprisingly boisterous and sobering film about how…

    The Glorias

    Huzzah! Women's rights!

"Are we there yet?", young Gloria asks to herself on the bus. No, but I think we're close.

I was not immediately on board with The Glorias, but after a while I started to embrace its more experimental aspects that brought the feeling from Across the Universe back. Powered by this strong directorial vision, some great performances and a powerful ending make this worthwhile even though the road it took might have been quite a few minutes too long for my taste.

    Happiest Season

More like "Just content season" to me really.

This movie took almost half its run-time to click for me. Stewart gives this one look to Mackenzie Davis when the latter tells her she isn't allowed to come to dinner. That's where it started getting good in my opinion. All that came before and some of it in the over-the-top ending after that midpoint as well felt extremely generic unlike what the extremely high praise reviews were describing.

    I may have…

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

If anything, Portrait de la jeune fille en feu is WARM. πŸ”₯

Now excuse me for that easy pun because this film deserves much better from a review. Yes, this is a love story; but it's so much more than that. These two woman, and the servant Sophie, base their relations on equality. Any form of hierarchy almost vanishes when only they are on screen. There's a certain tenderness that captivates the audience.

  • Joker

Never since playing Commodus has Joaquin Phoenix been so menacing, such a good villain. He delivers a performance for the ages in Joker, one that you should absolutely come and see. The man basically overshadows the entire project. What I found most astonishing is how you can see Arthur feel in pain and sad when he's laughing because of his condition.
