was brought to tears within 15 minutes. performance and authenticity, reproducibility and iconography, fertility and sterilization, the sharpness of pain and the dullness of drugs, the mythos of america through the suffering of our most recognizable woman. visually and thematically gripping in a way few films have been able to achieve in a media landscape that typically offers hackneyed, sanitized versions of reality. the score is gorgeous and de armas' intricate, intimate portrayal of marilyn is marvelous. love it!

    my review on substack

a movie about being triggered, about having/wanting "receipts," about being fucked up because your mom has bpd (???) or your parents are too rich (???), about nothing except the fact that tiktok rots your brain. an unfortunate addition to the current cinematic inclination toward trite, meandering stories about anodyne adolescent melodrama, the death rattle of a culture obsessed with the aesthetic of "trauma" through the lens of "privilege." bleh

a master at the peak of her craft. barbra's vocals and expressive abilities on display are, as always, marvelous and, as always, a guiding force of the film. hard to think of another man who has ever been as hot in a movie as mandy patinkin is as avigdor. the pursuit of religious intellectualism as a freeing rather than confining route, the transgression of gender as a path to the redeeming power of love ....... nothing's impossible!!!!!!

i don't really see a political reason to make this movie aside from warning you that you should be wary of your evil lesbian coworkers if you pretend to be the victim of a terrorist attack, or an aesthetic reason beyond showing that they know marginally more about how instagram works than directors twice quinn shephard's age. every "serious" moment falls unbearably flat, thanks to a script that is imbued with the most superficial clichés of the internet age. there's…

"Someone once said that love is the result of misunderstanding. We go in search of misunderstanding. When we're in agreement, when we truly understand one another, that's when love comes to an end. We attribute all goodness to that person and fall in love with them. And of course we arrive at the unsatisfying truth – because we don't want to know the truth – that when we understand one another, love ends. [...] When we don't understand someone, we…
