I had the pleasure of seeing this on 35mm at the Vista last night, courtesy of Craig Hammill and his exceptional Secret Movie Club. David Lynch created this masterpiece over the course of seven years, with the average amount of five people on crew. AFI funded this project, throughout and beyond Lynch’s tenure at the school. This is undoubtedly the greatest student film ever made.

The amount of time, love and care each person involved put into this project shines…

I love Douglas Sirk so much. Imitation of Life is his last feature film, his most successful film, and certainly his most extravagant. After completing Imitation of Life, Sirk returned to his homeland of Germany, where he once fled persecution during WWII, to protect himself, and his Jewish (second) wife, from the Nazi party. Real solid effort from Pixar legend, Pete Docter, and gang. It’s nice to see that the folks at Disney still have some tricks up their sleeves, they always end up gettin’ ya in the end.

Lawrence Kasdan, co-writer of The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark, delivers his directorial debut, an incredibly horny 80s erotic thriller. Kasdan’s love letter to film noir is a whole lotta fun. It also looks very nice!

I finally got around to checking this out after Mark Frost praised it in one of his Twin Peaks books.

Jakob Dylan tricks you into watching a super self-indulgent documentary about him liking music. There’s about 30 minutes of interviews that relate to how this doc has been advertised and the rest is Jakob covering songs of the time in an incredibly bland fashion. It’s worth it for the interviews though, there are some great gems of anecdotes in there. I’d just fast forward through all the Jakob Dylan.

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to come up with the words to describe my experience of watching Mandy on the big screen. I walked out of the theater in total silence, mind blown; annoying Alyssa, because I typically have a million things to say. I sat and stared at the screen, mouth wide open, my hands anxiously holding onto Alyssa’s. I was transported into another world, even with that person behind me who only came to scoff at…
