"If you ride like lightning, you are gonna crash like thunder."
Well, 'The Place Beyond the Pines' is a hell of a film indeed, it surprise me in many aspects, the themes where intelligent and gorgeous, but Derek Cianfrance took a very awkward decision taking away the subtlety and the outstanding flow that the film build until that moment. In other words, the film could it been a lot better than it was.
'The Place Beyond the Pines' is a film of 3 very distintive stories and parts (that I will not go into detail), The first part and how the film opens is very effective to introduce the story and the main theme of the film. When the second part kick's in you are already hooked, and you just want to know where the story is gonna go. The third part is not as good thematically or visually as the other two, but gives a sense of a conclusion to the stories in a way.
Mike Patton most well know as the Lead singer of 'Faith No More', created a bittersweet soundtrack. For example, the theme song for Luke, my God, that song is so sad and beautiful to listen too, it encapsulates everything the film has to say.
The whole cast was great, no surprise there, I was expecting that, what I was not expecting was Eva Mendes to really hit it home, she did an outstanding job with the role, certainly her best role yet.
'The Place Beyond the Pines' might be a film about family, consequences or simply human nature, whatever the theme is, the film pulls you in, and doesn't let you go until the credits role.
