Ghibli-flix film #1: Earlier this month, Ghibli hit Netflix in Canada!!! I’ve been trying to get access to these for a while and I was gonna do a half-attempt at this as my next challenge anyways so needless to say I was thrilled by the news.
I’ll be including Nausicaä since its studio (Topcraft) was essentially bought & rebranded as Ghibli after going bankrupt, and of course was directed by the man himself, Hayao Miyazaki.
Unlike my previous animation marathons I have no frame of reference for these films, other than a general curiosity in the studio and awareness of the vast appreciation for the movies they produce. I’m excited to walk into 21 animations knowing nothing about the plots, as opposed to the Pixar and Blue Sky filmographies that I had previously been exposed to.
At first glance I didn’t love the movie as much as the rating indicates, but after thinking about it for a while I realized how intricate it was, and also what a beautiful analogy it is for the current global situation.
