2022 was a great year for animation. We got a movie from almost every major studio (Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, Illumination, Cartoon Saloon, Sony, Nickelodeon, Warner Bros., Comix, technically even Blue Sky). Of course there were a few exceptions among Ghibli, Laika, Aardman, but the streamers also stayed involved. A couple auteurs released animated projects (Apollo 10 1/2 & Pinocchio), there was no shortage of stop-motion (Wendell & Wild, The House), and direct-to-video seems to have survived another year (on the back of multiple DC, Tom & Jerry, and Scooby-Doo releases)! Some indies even managed to get eyes on them—a lot of eyes in some cases (Marcel).
Hopefully we’re just as spoiled in 2023!
