After Gordie’s nightmare, he and Chris share one of the best conversations ever put to film.
In the dark of the night, in the middle of the woods, when everything else might as well be dead to the world, the two 12 year boys bare their souls, because they’re absolutely terrified. Terrified of moving on without a brother, terrified to confront a system that wants them to lose, terrified they must return to a town whose citizens’ expectations will define their futures. But in that moment, they have each other. Just like that, the meaning behind the film’s otherwise unrelated title becomes evident.
when the night has come
and the land is dark
and the moon is the only light we’ll see
no, I won’t be afraid
oh, I won’t be afraid
just as long as you stand, stand by me
