When business gets in the way of true human connection. "American Honey" is slightly overlong and meandering, but it's absolutely worth it. Fascinating to see how Andrea Arnold doesn't cling to scenes of heartbreak because her heroine Star doesn't want to give in to her heartbreak. Arnold as unsentimental as she is unjudgmental, which makes naive, stubborn, complicated, wonderful Star one of the most exciting protagonists in a long time. And oh the thinkpieces one could write about the conflicting ideas about business, selling, being sold, selling out, exploiting and being exploited. Fascinating stuff.
