Most movies deserve at least 2-1/2 stars just for the Herculean effort it takes for them to be made.

Anatomy of a Fall is a stunning, full-blown masterpiece filled with some of the most invigorating and maddening courtroom scenes I’ve ever seen.

I’ll be the first to admit that I spent a good portion of the first half of this film with a firm opinion of how Samuel’s death occurred and thinking to myself that there was no way director Justine Triet would get me to change my mind. But goddamn it, her plotting is so deliciously ambiguous, her…

Damn. Every time I start to wonder if Martin Scorsese might be slightly overrated in his position as a seminal figure of cinema, I watch another one of his films that truly blows my mind. He is a legitimate master of his craft; the way he builds and sustains tension while never letting the pace of the story suffer is honestly a sight to behold. This story of a bored word processor who is gradually sucked into a nightmare in…

    It Came from Outer Space

    ★★★★

It Came From Outer Space has a couple of really great performances (I’ll never get tired of watching Richard Carlson) and some genuinely effective black-and-white cinematography aided by lots of fog and eerie creature effects, but the real reason it’s worth watching is its twist on the alien invaders formula. At the time of this film’s release, that formula wasn’t very old, but what Harry Essex’s script (from Ray Bradbury’s treatment) does with it feels kinda revolutionary.

    The aliens here…

The way I know a movie is going to become one of my favorites, even if it doesn’t make an enormous immediate impression upon my first viewing, is if it stubbornly refuses to leave my head. I’ll find myself thinking about it unprompted, laughing to myself about an especially well-executed joke, or rewatching key scenes on YouTube just to see them again. This has happened recently with Broadcast News and After Hours, and now again with Lost in America. I’m…

    Past Lives

    ★★★★

Past Lives is a movie of haunting, ever-present possibility. It’s a movie of what ifs, and what happens if you let those what ifs define the person they revolve around. It’s a movie about choices and happenstance, and how they work together to shape the course of your life. And it’s a movie about identity, and how really knowing yourself and your desires and your ambitions can feel mystifying when the people around you only see you a certain way.…

    Wayne's World

    ★★★★

Well, this was a surprise! I went into Wayne’s World expecting something of a low-rent SNL sketch adaptation and was bowled over by how effortlessly funny and unorthodox it is. So many scenes in this film—from rocking out to “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the car to the spoofs on product placement and corporate creative control—had me smiling the biggest smile and struggling to stifle laughter so as not to wake up my wife.

Michael Myers, prior to his Austin Powers run, is…
