The Place Beyond the Pines is a film I've been looking forward to seeing since it came out. Well I finally got around to it and it didn't disappoint. It is beautifully shot, brilliantly acted, and uniquely put together. The story took some unexpected twists and the narrative shifted a few times. Though it caught me off guard I felt it worked really well.
Ryan Gosling is fantastic in the film, but I was even more impressed with Bradley Cooper. Cooper seems to get a lot of hate, but I feel it is undeserved. He's proven to be a great actor. Gosling and Cooper aren't the only ones who deliver though. Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, and Ray Liotta also turn in some fine performances. Emory Cohen is also very good and Dane DeHaan turns in yet another solid performance.
Overall, I really liked The Place Beyond the Pines and look forward to seeing it again in the future. It has an inventive narrative structure that works very well and is carried by a great cast. I remember when it came out they were trying to sell it as the next Drive, but it's really nothing like it other than having Gosling play a similar character. 8/10
