Meandering, self-indulgent arthouse mumblecore that, while equipped with the necessary sincerity and emotional sensitivity, mostly lacks the thematic complexity and raw energy that stood out in Dolan's early films.
Maybe I'm a bit too tough with him because I do like his visual sensibilities (and I think even his peculiar needle drops?), but I'd love to see some kind of artistic maturation in his work. Instead, it feels like Dolan is regressing with dramedies like this, as personal as they may be to him.
