Jess Canakis’s review published on Letterboxd:
I actually quite liked this film. People have told me not to bother with it in the past, but I'm glad I did watch it because it was a nice contrast from the main Skywalker-centric story of the Star Wars franchise.
Maybe that's just because I love Han though. :)
The cast was great, and it was a great film for celebrity people-watching because of the sheer number of big names in it. (I was especially proud of myself for recognising Phoebe Waller-Bridge as L3 by her voice alone). While I'm talking about actors, I'd like to give a shoutout to Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos, who had me acting like that Bill Hader meme that says "Well mark me down as scared and horny". I'm serious, I have a soft spot for suave, smug, British bad guys.
I also thought it was interesting that this movie didn't have any lightsabers until the very last scene, and no Jedi or use of the force. Sometimes it's difficult for me to understand that stuff as a new Star Wars convert, so it was a welcome break from pulling out my phone to open Wookieepedia every second scene.
I also just love the idea of Star Wars being a Western set in space, and this one was really Western.
