  • The House of the Spirits

The House of the Spirits 1993

★★½ Watched by Julie Chigbrow 02 Aug 2022

Not even getting into the whitewashing of a South American story written by a Chilean, there's so much this movie fails to capture from the book. Namely, the magic of Clara and her offspring, but also the political tensions of the times.
What works: Glenn is fantastic and Meryl feels like Clara (at least mostly).

  • Ford v Ferrari

    Ford v Ferrari 2019

★★★½ Watched by Julie Chigbrow 24 Jul 2022

Matt Damon pulling off a decent Tommy Lee Jones.

  • The Princess

    The Princess 2022

No clue why this movie was made. It's a total waste. I knew it wouldn't be "good" but had hoped for some entertainment at least.
One positive: I was initially worried about having to listen to Joey King with a faux British accent. Luckily her throwaway lines are mostly limited to three- or four-word sentences and we're mostly left with gasps and grunts through endless fight scenes.

Missing some of the heart and specifics of the book but still a decent film adaptation. ACAB

Not men making decisions over a woman's body without her consent. I also can never take Miles Teller seriously.

  • The Batman

    The Batman 2022

★★★ Watched by Julie Chigbrow 23 Apr 2022

I need more Paul Dano. Appreciate the darkness but this felt a bit flat without the dialog and performance to justify the length.

  • The Bubble

    The Bubble 2022

This has no business being 2 hours long.

  • Radium Girls

    Radium Girls 2018

This film tried to ruin a perfectly good book. I don't understand any of the choices made here.

  • The Killing of a Sacred Deer

The Killing of a Sacred Deer 2017

★★★ Watched by Julie Chigbrow 30 Dec 2021

On par with the same shocking violence and WTF vibe of Dogtooth. Unfortunately, it has less soul and feels more forced. This is aiming too much for scare tactics and style points and lacks the substance Lanthimos is capable of.
