  Within the realm of maximalist cinema, there are two types of ensemble character-driven dramas: films that feature a handful of well-developed characters (i.e. Magnolia) that, narratively, in combination, achieve a desired thematic effect, and films with an overabundance of characters, where an individual character's development is an afterthought and they simply exist in support of a greater overarching narrative (i.e. Nashville).
