JCottle’s review published on Letterboxd:
I think one day Shane Black will write a really good movie.
This was almost one.
Unfortunately, the derpy bits for Gosling, like forgetting a girl's name and saying stuff like "No she ACTUALLY wears Coke bottles for glasses" (I wager most people have no idea what that phrase means), wheezing near a corpse etc. There are some good bits that work, like going right back into the elevator when they enter a bloodbath.
We've got to get out of the Big Lebowski porno-detective thing ASAP. Sleaze has been part of pulp since at least the 70s novels of the genre, and possibly well before then. But Shane managed to make it boring here, and so tangentially linked to the Big Picture that he could have made it about a monkey farm crew and still told the same story. The entire Amelia vehicle made little sense to me.
